Electronic "e-Apostille" service

Electronic Apostille (e-Apostille)

An electronic apostille, or e-Apostille, is a fully digital apostille certificate issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to legalise an electronically signed UK document.

Before an e-Apostille can be issued, the document must be electronically certified by a UK solicitor or notary public using a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) or Advanced Electronic Signature (AES). We provide bundle e-certification (QES or AES) together with fast e-Apostille processing to ensure your documents meet FCDO requirements for digital legalisation.

An e-Apostille is a convenient, fast, and cost-effective alternative to the traditional paper apostille, helping you avoid courier delays and printing costs. Once issued, the legalised file is secure, can be downloaded multiple times, and is easy to share electronically with recipients.

Before you proceed

Because e-Apostille is a new and developing FCDO service, please ensure the following:

1. Check whether your document is eligible

Not all documents can be electronically legalised. Some may still require wet-ink signatures or paper certification.

2. Check that the recipient accepts e-Apostilles

Not every foreign authority accepts digital apostilles. Some require a traditional paper-based apostille instead.

Documents we can process

Personal documents

Many documents are now issued as digital PDFs. This includes most court documents, P60s, payslips, tax documents, HMRC letters and more.

Company documents

Companies House documents can all be verified online. The e-apostille can be added to all Companies House certificates. Other documents need further verification.

Academic documents

If a university sends us a document directly to us we can easily provide the e-apostille. Otherwise, we can verify university issued certificates (e.g. degree, masters PhD).

Which documents can’t be e-Apostilled?

Certain documents are not eligible for e-Apostille services. These include:

  • General Register Office (GRO) documents
  • Birth, death, marriage, civil partnership and adoption certificates
  • ACRO police certificates for England and Wales
  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificates for England and Wales
  • Disclosure certificates for Scotland or Northern Ireland
  • Fingerprint certificates
  • Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) membership certificates

These documents cannot be e-certified or e-apostilled because the issuing authorities do not currently permit electronic certification or electronic legalisation. In addition, some contain physical security features that must be checked on the original document only.

Documents that can be e-Apostilled

We can e-certify and e-apostille most other document types, but please contact us if you need clarification.

How does it work?

It is important to process your documents correctly to avoid delays and additional costs. When we legalise your document through the e-Apostille service, we first check that it has been prepared properly and is suitable for digital legalisation. Once confirmed, we arrange for our solicitor to apply a compliant digital signature (QES or AES) to the electronic document.

The digitally certified document is then uploaded securely to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for e-Apostille issuance.

When the process is complete, your fully legalised document — including the digital solicitor certification and the electronic apostille — will be emailed to you in PDF format, ready to download, store, and share as required.
