A UK bank statement is one of the most commonly requested financial documents in overseas applications - from residency and visa processes to foreign property purchases, overseas bank account openings and proof of funds requirements. Most foreign authorities will not accept an unauthenticated bank statement, regardless of which UK bank issued it. An apostille is typically what they require.
Why solicitor or notary certification is always required
A bank statement is a commercial document. It is issued by a private financial institution, not a government body, and carries no official signature, seal or stamp that the FCDO can independently verify. Before the FCDO will issue an apostille, the statement must be certified by a UK solicitor or Notary Public. The solicitor or notary public examines the statement, verifies it is a genuine bank-issued document, and applies their wet-ink signature and official stamp. The FCDO then authenticates the solicitor's or notary's wet-ink signature.
Online and printed statements
Most UK bank statements are now issued digitally - downloaded as PDFs from online banking portals or received by email. A printed version of a digital statement follows the same route: it must be certified by a solicitor or Notary Public before FCDO submission. The solicitor may request a bank-stamped copy or ask the applicant to provide the statement alongside a covering letter from the bank confirming its authenticity. Requirements vary between solicitors, so confirm what they need before the appointment.
When an apostilled bank statement is typically required
The most common situations include overseas residency and visa applications requiring proof of financial standing or savings; foreign property purchases where the seller, notary or land registry requires evidence of funds; opening a bank account abroad where the foreign bank requires authenticated proof of an existing UK banking relationship; Golden Visa and investment migration programmes requiring evidence of financial capacity; and overseas legal proceedings or regulatory submissions requiring authenticated financial records.
How many months of statements are needed
Requirements vary by destination and purpose. Visa offices commonly request three to six months of statements. Property transactions may require twelve months. Golden Visa programmes typically specify a minimum balance over a defined period. Always confirm the exact requirement with the receiving authority before having statements certified — apostilling the wrong number of months wastes time and money.
For countries outside the Hague Convention
For Hague Apostille Convention member countries, the apostille is the final step. For countries outside the Convention - including the UAE and Gulf states - embassy attestation is also required after the apostille.
