UK birth certificates are required across a wide range of Gulf applications - from UAE residency and family sponsorship to employment visa processes in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and elsewhere. Because the Gulf states sit largely outside the Hague Apostille Convention, a UK apostille is only the first of three authentication stages required for UAE use, and each stage has specific requirements for how the certificate must be presented.
Stage one: FCDO apostille
A birth certificate issued by the General Register Office, a local register office in England or Wales, the National Records of Scotland, or the General Register Office for Northern Ireland carries the official registrar's wet-ink signature or seal. It goes directly to the FCDO for apostille without requiring solicitor certification. The FCDO authenticates the registrar's signature, seal or stamp and attaches the apostille - a physical paper certificate fixed to the back of the original. Standard processing costs £45 and takes around ten working days. If the original certificate is damaged, laminated or faded, order a replacement from the relevant registry before submitting.
Stage two: UAE Embassy digital attestation
For UAE purposes, the apostilled birth certificate must then be submitted to the UAE Embassy in London. Since early 2025 the Embassy operates a fully digital attestation system - physical stamps and stickers are no longer applied. The Embassy scans the document and applies a digital attestation electronically. Processing takes approximately eight to ten working days with no expedited service.
Stage three: MOFA digital attestation
Following UAE Embassy approval, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE issues a digital attestation certificate as a secure PDF. This MOFA digital certificate is the final authentication step and is recognised across the UAE for residency, family sponsorship, employment and banking purposes.
For other Gulf destinations
Saudi Arabia joined the Hague Apostille Convention in 2022, which means an FCDO apostille is now the final authentication step for most document types submitted in Saudi Arabia.
